Update as of 02/28/25

The woman who accused Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of raping her when she was 13 years old has dropped her lawsuit against both men.

In a high-profile legal case involving two giants of the music industry, Jay-Z has been named alongside Sean “Diddy” Combs in allegations of sexual assault. The story emerged when an unnamed woman, referred to in legal documents as “Jane Doe,” amended a previous lawsuit against Diddy to include Jay-Z. The accuser claims that the incident took place at an after-party following the MTV Video Music Awards in 2000, when she was 13 years old. In her account, the plaintiff alleges that she was taken to the party by a limousine driver who stated that Diddy had an interest in younger women, and that she was later raped by Jay-Z and Diddy in a room where another unnamed celebrity was also present.

The mogul is the first celebrity to be named alongside Diddy in lawsuits. Following these allegations, Jay-Z, legally known as Shawn Carter, has vehemently denied the claims. He has filed a motion in court seeking either a dismissal of the lawsuit or the disclosure of the plaintiff's identity, stating that the anonymous nature of the allegations unfairly tarnishes his reputation. In his public denials, Jay-Z has accused the Texas attorney Tony Buzbee, who represents the plaintiff, of orchestrating an “extortionate campaign” aimed at leveraging his and Diddy's celebrity for financial gain. Jay-Z has gone on record dismissing the lawsuit as an attempt to blackmail him into a settlement, emphasizing that he would not be coerced by such tactics.

This case forms part of a larger series of lawsuits against Diddy, who is currently incarcerated and facing separate federal charges including sex trafficking. Diddy’s legal team has critiqued the wave of allegations as bogus claims made for publicity and monetary gain, remarking that the litigation against their client constitutes baseless attacks. They maintain Diddy's innocence and reaffirm their confidence in the judicial process to vindicate him.

Jay-Z's response to the lawsuit highlights the personal toll such allegations have on his family, particularly his concerns about discussing the matter with his children. He expressed his heartbreak for what his family, including his wife, Beyoncé, and their three children, might endure as a result of these public accusations. The rapper has asserted that only a criminal proceeding would be appropriate if such grave allegations were true, calling for “real justice” rather than financial settlements in civil suits.

The legal battle unfolds against a backdrop of intense media scrutiny, as both Jay-Z and Diddy brace for court appearances as well as the court of public opinion. Despite the grave nature of the allegations, Jay-Z’s legal team, led by renowned attorney Alex Spiro, is steadfast in asserting his innocence and pushing for the case's dismissal unless solid evidence emerges.
