Soundgarden, one of the pioneering bands of the grunge movement, is moving forward with plans to release a final album featuring their iconic frontman, Chris Cornell. The album, left unfinished due to Cornell's tragic death in 2017, has remained a focal point for the band and its fans. The band, which formed in 1984, has long been celebrated for hits such as “Black Hole Sun” and “Rusty Cage.” Chris Cornell was a fundamental part of the sound and success of Soundgarden, and the unfinished album represents one last piece of collaboration among the surviving members, including guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd, and drummer Matt Cameron.

The path to releasing this album has been fraught with legal challenges. A significant hurdle was the legal dispute between the band members and Cornell’s widow, Vicky Cornell. Both parties were embroiled in a lawsuit regarding the rights and royalties associated with the new tracks. This conflict created a substantial delay in the album's release as each side had different interpretations of Chris Cornell's legacy and rights. The band claimed that Vicky Cornell used funds from a 2019 tribute concert for personal benefits, whereas she argued that the band members were excluding her from her late husband's royalties.

Despite these issues, the band remains steadfast in its dedication to completing the album, recognizing its importance not only as a personal tribute to Cornell but also as a gift to their fans. Kim Thayil expressed a strong desire not to leave the project unfinished, highlighting the band's collective pride in their body of work. He articulated the emotional significance this album holds, both as a piece of art and as a piece dedicated to honoring Cornell's profound influence on the band. The members aim to fulfill what they see as Chris's last artistic journey, ensuring that the final product stands as a fitting testament to his contribution to music and his fans.

The completion of this last album will not only close an important chapter for Soundgarden but is also a way for the surviving members to connect and reminisce over the collaborative spirit of their frontman. Soundgarden has previously reconvened under the anagram name “Nudedragons” for special performances, including charity events, which underscores their ongoing commitment to honoring Cornell's memory and maintaining the band's legacy. Their impending induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame further accentuates the lasting impact Cornell and his music have had on the rock genre.

The decision to release the final album with Chris Cornell highlights the enduring legacy of Soundgarden and their significant role in the history of grunge music. This project, which the band members hope will serve as a meaningful tribute to Cornell, is expected to provide closure for both the band and their fans. By introducing new yet significant work from their late frontman, Soundgarden aspires to honor Chris Cornell’s artistry and ensure his music continues to resonate with generational audiences. The release is poised not only as a celebration of their past but also as a lasting impression of their journey, beautifully capturing the essence of their musical collaboration and friendship.
