In celebration of a milestone that has captivated fans for decades, Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins is set to pay homage to the 30th anniversary of the iconic album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Corgan's ambitious project, an opera concert series A Night of Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness, will take place in his hometown at the Lyric Opera of Chicago during Fall 2025. With performances spanning seven nights from November 21 to 30, the concert series promises to be a pioneering blend of opera and rock, expanding the boundaries of traditional music performances.

Mellon Collie was the third studio album by The Smashing Pumpkins, originally released in 1995, and it quickly cemented its status as a classic alternative rock album. The double album features beloved tracks such as “Tonight, Tonight,” “Bullet with Butterfly Wings,” and “1979,” which continue to resonate with audiences worldwide. The album's lasting impact is underscored by its commercial success, having been certified Diamond by the RIAA and making its debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart. This reimagined series aims to transform the album's powerful narrative into a unique operatic experience that merges Corgan's distinctive rock essence with the rich, emotive depth of opera.

The opera's arrangements and orchestration are a joint effort between Corgan and conductor James Lowe, promising a fresh sonic and visual experience. The event will also feature the Lyric Opera Orchestra and Chorus, with costumes designed by House of Gilles, further enhancing the immersive atmosphere of the production. Tickets for this exclusive event will be available to the general public from April 11, 2025.

The significance of this collaboration is not lost on Corgan, who expresses excitement about blending the emotional storytelling elements of rock and opera. He reflects on the power of opera to elevate the already impactful compositions from Mellon Collie, providing a new dimension of experience him as well as audiences. This project is an exemplar of how music can transcend its original boundaries when presented through different artistic mediums, promising an innovative homage that will capture the essence of both traditional opera and rock music.
