Rock legends Styx are set to make waves again with their latest studio effort, “Circling From Above.” This album represents the band's 18th release and is generating buzz not only due to its stellar music but also because of its unique theme – birds. Guitarist-vocalist Tommy Shaw, who is a pivotal creative force in Styx, spearheaded the project, which beautifully utilizes avian imagery as a metaphor to explore various human experiences. The album comprises 13 tracks that reflect the diverse dynamics of the band's signature sound, including introspective melodies balanced with powerful rock anthems and intricate compositions.

The process of creating “Circling From Above” was a collaborative effort, featuring contributions from all band members. This includes the founding guitarist and vocalist James “JY” Young, original bassist Chuck Panozzo, longtime drummer Todd Sucherman, and keyboardist Lawrence Gowan. Joining them are guitarist-vocalist Will Evankovich and bassist Terry Gowan, completing the current lineup. Particularly intriguing is how this album captures messages about humanity's relationship with technology and nature, themes deeply embedded within the album's structure. The idea behind the bird concept arose during the brainstorming phase, with Shaw confessing that while initially risky, the sheer enthusiasm within the band and their fanbase fueled this creative direction.

The first single from the album, “Build And Destroy,” has already garnered attention for its catchy melody and thematic depth. Helmed with a sense of urgency and strength, the track encapsulates the spirit of Styx's long-standing musical prowess. Lawrence Gowan, who takes lead vocals on this track, alongside Shaw and Evankovich, quickly brought the lyrics to life, assembling it within a day and a half. The song exemplifies the overarching narrative and drama of the album, echoing elements of iconic sci-fi themes reminiscent of “Star Trek” or “Twilight Zone.”

Styx continues to demonstrate their dynamic range by deftly blending theatrical elements with deeply sincere narratives. This balance creates an exhilarating listening experience that invites listeners to reflect on their connection to broader existential topics. The album cover art visually interprets these themes, depicting starlings in synchronized flight over an abandoned satellite dish, signifying the band's commentary on human ingenuity and its unintended consequences.

As part of their promotional activities, Styx announced an exclusive album reveal via TalkShop.live, with autographed CDs available for order. For those eager to experience the music in a physical form, CDs and vinyls can be purchased directly from StyxWorld.com. The digital release, however, remains set for July 18. The band's commitment to connecting with fans extends to their ongoing “Brotherhood Of Rock” tour, a collaboration with the Kevin Cronin Band, and featuring special guest Don Felder. This tour promises to bring both nostalgia and fresh energy to arenas, with Styx sharing their classic hits alongside their new material.

The album—a follow-up to the 2017 release “The Mission” and 2021's “Crash Of The Crown”—continues the artistic resurgence Styx has been experiencing. The band members attribute this creative success to the harmonious environment within the group, where mutual respect and shared artistic excitement thrive. This atmosphere has cultivated a fertile ground for creating their latest opus, solidifying Styx's legacy as a band that transcends the mere playing of instruments and enters the realm of storytelling and emotional introspection.
