Morgan Wallen, a prominent Nashville-based country singer, generated significant buzz when he abruptly exited the stage during his stint as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” last March. This unexpected departure left fans and viewers puzzled, sparking various speculations about what might have prompted such an action. In a recent appearance on the podcast “Sundae Conversations,” hosted by Caleb Pressley, Wallen finally addressed the incident, providing clarity on the matter. When questioned by Pressley if something had upset him, Wallen simply stated, “No, no, I was just ready to go home,” revealing that there was no ill intent behind his decision. He added, “I'd been there all week,” suggesting that the demanding schedule had simply caught up with him.

Following his exit, Wallen took to Instagram, posting a picture of his private jet with the caption, “Get me to God's country.” The cryptic message quickly caught attention, and Wallen capitalized on the momentum by launching merchandise bearing the phrase, which went on sale in under 48 hours. The viral nature of his post further fueled both intrigue and humor around the incident, demonstrating his strategic response in leveraging the situation. Additionally, “SNL” didn't miss an opportunity to poke fun at Wallen's exit in a subsequent episode. During the “Weekend Update” segment, Colin Jost quipped, “Money is leaving the stock market faster than Morgan Wallen at goodnights,” while a cold open featuring Trump impersonator James Austin Johnson echoed the now-famous phrase, “Get me to God's country.”

The abruptness of Wallen's departure was notable not only to the audience but also to fellow “SNL” cast members. Longtime cast member Kenan Thompson expressed both surprise and curiosity regarding Wallen's swift exit. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Thompson noted the unexpectedness of Wallen's action, which deviated from the typical post-show mingling that musical guests engage in. Thompson remarked, “It was just like, oh wow, that was pretty visible,” reflecting the general sentiment of bewilderment shared by the show's crew.

Despite the discussions surrounding the incident, Wallen maintained that there was no controversy or dissatisfaction with “SNL” itself. In fact, sources close to Wallen confirmed that the singer held no ill will towards the show. The entire episode seems to underscore not only Wallen's readiness to conclude his appearance but also his adeptness at turning an unexpected event into a branding opportunity. This isn't the first time Wallen's interactions with “SNL” have been marked by notoriety. His initial scheduled appearance on the show in October 2020 was canceled due to his failure to adhere to COVID-19 protocols, only for him to later appear and perform in December of that year.
