Bono Surprises Dolly Parton With Bagpiper on Her 80th Birthday

Bono found a uniquely Irish way to honor Dolly Parton on her 80th birthday by sending a bagpiper to surprise her during the celebration.

Parton, who turned 80 on January 19, was visibly stunned when a kilted bagpiper appeared to play “Happy Birthday” as part of the festivities. The performance was accompanied by a birthday cake bearing a handwritten message from Bono, signed simply, “Love Bono.”

The bagpiper, identified as Irish musician Patrick D’Arcy, was sent on behalf of Bono and the members of U2. The moment was captured on video and later shared by Parton on social media, where her amused and heartfelt reaction quickly drew attention from fans.

In the clip, Parton laughs and jokes with the bagpiper, at one point playfully asking if the surprise meant she was being called “an old bag.” The comment was delivered with her trademark humor and charm, drawing laughter from those in attendance.

Parton later shared her appreciation for the gesture, calling it an unexpected and thoughtful surprise. Fans responded enthusiastically online, praising the exchange as a rare and joyful moment between two artists from very different musical worlds.

The birthday tribute was part of a larger wave of celebrations marking Parton’s milestone year, which included messages from fellow musicians and fans around the globe. The bagpipe surprise stood out for its personal touch and cultural flair, reflecting Bono’s roots while honoring Parton’s larger-than-life legacy.

The moment also underscored the mutual admiration shared between the two artists. Both have long reputations for philanthropy, storytelling, and longevity in the music industry, and the surprise highlighted how that respect extends beyond genre boundaries.

As Parton continues to celebrate her 80th year, the unexpected serenade added another memorable chapter to a career already filled with iconic moments.
