A long-gestating documentary about Billy Preston is now moving into U.S. theaters, giving one of popular music’s most influential keyboardists a major on-screen reintroduction.

Per Deadline, Billy Preston: That’s The Way God Planned It is being released by Abramorama, White Horse Pictures, and Homegrown Pictures, with a U.S. theatrical launch that began Feb. 20 at Film Forum in New York. The outlet also reported that the film first debuted at SXSW in 2024, later played DOC NYC, and was set for a 2026 rollout in select North American markets.

The project is directed by multi-Emmy winner Paris Barclay and written by Barclay and Cheo Hodari Coker, according to Film Forum’s listing and distribution coverage. Executive producer credits include Olivia Harrison and Jonathan Clyde, with a larger producing team spanning White Horse Pictures and Homegrown Pictures.

The documentary’s central argument is straightforward: Preston was not just a sideman in historic rooms, he was a transformative musical force whose fingerprints are all over modern soul, rock, funk, and pop. In an interview with NPR, Barclay describes Preston’s ability to alter the atmosphere instantly, pointing to his now-famous appearance during the Beatles’ tense Get Back period.

The film also revisits Preston’s chart legacy, including No. 1 hits such as “Outa-Space,” “Will It Go Round in Circles,” and “Nothing from Nothing,” plus songwriting credits on “You Are So Beautiful,” which became a signature recording for Joe Cocker.

Just as importantly, the documentary does not stay in celebratory mode. Coverage from NPR and Film Forum indicates the film confronts difficult parts of Preston’s life, including addiction, legal trouble, and pressures around sexuality and identity. In NPR’s interview, Barclay speaks directly about what he sees as the emotional cost of secrecy and stigma, particularly in religious spaces where queer identity was condemned or silenced.

Film Forum also highlights critical praise emphasizing the mix of performance footage and deeper personal reckoning. Even when commentary differs on style, reviewers largely agree on Preston’s astonishing musicianship and the film’s success in re-centering his legacy.

With the New York opening underway and additional city dates appearing through spring on the official film site, Billy Preston: That’s The Way God Planned It now has a chance to move beyond festival buzz and into broader conversation.
