Johnny Mathis, the esteemed Grammy-winning singer, has decided to draw the curtain on his illustrious live performance career. After more than seven decades captivating audiences worldwide with his timeless hits, Mathis announced his retirement citing age-related memory issues as a significant factor. While the decision to retire from touring is filled with deep regret, as expressed by Mathis' team, age and health concerns have become increasingly pressing. Approaching 90, Mathis is looking to bow out gracefully, with his final performance set for May 18, 2025, at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey.

The news came through a statement on Mathis' official Facebook page, which revealed the bittersweet decision that due to accelerated memory issues, coupled with his advanced age, Mathis would no longer continue his concert tours beyond May. The statement relayed heartfelt gratitude from Mathis and his entire team to the fans who have supported and celebrated his music for so many years. Despite his memory challenges, reports indicate that Mathis's voice remains exceptional, reflecting the immense talent that had become his hallmark for generations.

Johnny Mathis’s career began in the 1950s when he burst onto the music scene with a smooth, romantic sound that became his signature. His extensive catalog of hits includes timeless classics such as “Chances Are,” “Misty,” “It's Not for Me to Say,” and “Wonderful! Wonderful!” which have continued to grace airwaves and playlists across the world. Mathis’s records consistently topped the charts during his peak, with his “Greatest Hits” album setting a record for the longest run on the Billboard 200 until 2020. Mathis’s influence in the music industry is lauded by his peers and was recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.

The decision to retire is understood as a necessary step given the taxing nature of touring, as acknowledged by Mathis's representative Robert Scott. While Mathis's day-to-day life is not overly affected by his memory issues, the demanding travel schedule has begun to take a toll on his health, underscoring the need for this decision. Nevertheless, the legend has assured fans that his passion for music remains undimmed, even as he takes a step back from the stage.

Apart from his accolades in music, Johnny Mathis has also been celebrated for his contributions to the broader cultural landscape, having been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Great American Songbook Hall of Fame. His soothing voice and romantic melodies have had an indelible impact on the world of music, making him a beloved figure across several generations.

The music community has responded with an outpouring of appreciation for Mathis’s contributions, reminiscing about the magic of his performances and his enduring influence on the romantic ballad genre. Fans attending his remaining shows in the Voice of Romance Tour have expressed admiration for his stamina and the continued quality of his performances, even as they mark the end of an era with his approaching retirement.
