Benmont Tench, legendary musician and founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, has released his long-awaited second solo album, The Melancholy Season, after a hiatus of 11 years. This album marks a significant return for Tench, who first embarked on his solo journey with the release of You Should Be So Lucky back in 2014. The gap between albums was not due to a lack of creativity or inspiration but rather the myriad of life events and professional commitments that occupied Tench's time over the years. From battling oral cancer, undergoing extensive medical procedures, and experiencing the profound loss of his bandmate Tom Petty, to joyous occasions like the birth of his daughter, Tench's life was full of both challenges and triumphs. During this period, he remained active in the music scene, collaborating with renowned artists such as Ringo Starr and The Rolling Stones and participating in various tribute tours.

The Melancholy Season is produced by Jonathan Wilson and features notable contributions from musicians such as Taylor Goldsmith, Sara Watkins, and Jenny O. The unique blend of talents on this album complements Tench's vision, bringing to life a collection of tracks that are both introspective and expansive. The album is a tapestry of emotions drawn from Tench's life experiences between 2014 and 2019, with tracks like the title piece and “Under the Starlight” reflecting his personal journey through these years of change and reflection.

One of the defining characteristics of The Melancholy Season is its minimalist approach to instrumentation, a conscious choice influenced by Tench's appreciation for albums like Bob Dylan’s John Wesley Harding and John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band. This sparse, spacious sound structure allows for a fuller, more potent emotional expression, encapsulating a musical philosophy that values the essence of simplicity. Tench's arrangement skills are particularly evident in how he balances his keyboard melodies with the layered but restrained contributions from fellow musicians, creating a soundscape that is both intimate and powerful.

In support of the album, Tench is embarking on a tour, including performances at intimate venues across the West Coast. These live performances promise to translate the album's intricate studio recordings into a direct and personal experience for audiences. This approach aligns with Tench's belief that the true essence of music is best captured in live settings, where the energy of an audience can enhance the emotional weight of each song. His setlist for this tour includes all the tracks from the album, allowing fans to experience the entire narrative crafted within The Melancholy Season live.
