What Came Before: Heart of Gold Vol. 1

Killphonic Records released the original Heart of Gold: The Songs of Neil Young Vol. 1 in April, also benefiting the Bridge School. That volume featured Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, The Doobie Brothers with Allison Russell, Eddie Vedder, Sharon Van Etten, Stephen Marley and Brandi Carlile.

King Princess and Draco Rosa Discuss Their Covers

King Princess covers “Helpless,” a song Neil Young wrote for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s 1970 album Deja Vu and later performed in The Last Waltz. She said the song is her mother’s and her own favorite Neil Young track, recalling hearing her mother sing it in the car on drives upstate.

King Princess recorded the cover with Brad Oberhofer at her father’s studio, with her father handling the recording. She played drums and keys while Oberhofer played guitar, and the pair cut the track in one take off click before building out the rest together; the only change from the original, she said, was making it longer.

Draco Rosa, a former Menudo member who became a rootsy folk musician, contributes a slow, grave version of “After the Gold Rush,” the title track from Young’s 1970 solo album.
